CI1000™ FEATURESimage

The CI1000™ Automated Controlled Impedance Testing System is designed to lower the cost and maximize the throughput of the TDR measurement process.

Manual TDR probing induces error in the measurement process. The current error window of TDR instruments and the manual probing process limits the type of measurements which can be taken, the length of the trace that tests can be conducted on, and dictates the use of test coupons. The CI1000™ automated system eliminates those restrictions by providing high accuracy. This accuracy allows measurements to be taken on live traces as well as on coupons.

Robot Assemblyimage

The CI1000™ robot assembly is designed to quickly, accurately and repeatably move the Probe Assembly onto the board, coupon, or panel under test. The assembly is a four (4) axis robot which includes rotation of the probe to allow testing of all orientations of test pads. The assembly's working envelope is 1000mm (39.3") x 750mm (29.5") with 360 degree rotation and extend/retract capability of 225mm (8.9"). The robot moves quickly (over 65 inches/sec) with an example point-to-point move from one test point to another of 12" including extend/retract being completed in 0.3 seconds. The repeatability of motion of each part of the robotic assembly is +/-0.01mm (+/-0.0004"). The robot is mounted in the horizontal position to allow easy manual load/unloading of boards to be tested. This configuration supports the standard SMEMA conveyer standard interface which allows third party automatic load/unload equipment to be incorporated with the CI1000™.

Operator's Station image

The operators station consists of an operator interface (flat panel monitor, keyboard, and mouse) on an ergonomic swing arm and a system controller (PC computer). A windows style graphical user interface (GUI) runs on the System Controller to provide a way for the operator and other personnel to access the CI1000™ system. The GUI provides all the necessary functionality to operate the CI1000™:

System Log-in: Three (3) levels of access is permitted (Operator, Management, Maintenance).
Run Tests: Tests can be started with simple keystrokes (or mouse button clicks).
Test Monitoring: Several screens allow the operator and/or manager to monitor the testing operations.
Automatic Test Data Handling: The necessary information about the specific board (panel) characteristics can be imported from the boards CAD/CAM files using the Introbotics file format. All imported data is stored in the CI1000™ systems relational database. Test results are also stored in the database and are available for exporting to the CI1000™ reporting package or the users plant SPC system.
Manual Teach: If CAD/CAM data is not available, the CI1000™ has a manual teach capability utilizing the camera system which allows the user to quickly and accurately teach the desired test points.
Measurement System Verification: The GUI provides the ability for the operator at any time to instruct the CI1000™ to self verify the accuracy of its measurement system.
Interface to Equipment: The GUI provides interface to standard and optional equipment including the TDR Instrumentation, SPC System, Board Load/Unload Equipment.

Flexible Board Holderimage

The flexible board holder allows a variety of board sizes to be mounted easily and quickly onto the CI1000™ for testing. The board holder supports mounting of boards from 5-1/4" x 1/2" up to 36" x 28.5". The holder has pneumatic foot pedals (to leave hands free) which control the opening and closing of the holders moving clamp. The operator simply places a board onto the bed of the holder and then closes the holder's moving clamp. The holder will simultaneously lift the board off the holder bed (leaving an air gap below the board) and clamp the board firmly and repeatably in place for testing.

TDR Probe Assembly image

The TDR Probe Assembly includes all components connecting the TDR sampling head to the probe tip. This assembly is designed to maximize the measurement accuracy. The assembly includes the following:

  • High Frequency Connectors (SMA and 3.5 mm)

  • High quality  flexible coax

  • Introbotics High Frequency Probe (Patented)

The assembly provides a very accurate measurement with high resolution. This is achieved through the use of the TDR instrumentation, high quality coax components to connect the instrument to the probe, and Introbotics high frequency probe. The combined probe assembly produces a rise-time at the probe tip of 35 psecs and a fail-time of 50 psecs. This allows accurate measurements on traces as short as 1/2" and high resolution of impedance discontinuities on longer traces.

The Introbotics probe is extremely robust and is designed for manufacturing operations. The probe tip itself does not utilize pogo pins and does not have any moving parts that can wear out.

Camera System image

CI1000 Camera

A high resolution camera and lens assembly is mounted to the robotic system for fiducial finding or to simplify the manual teach process.

Verification Station image

The verification station consists of a standard 50 calibrated airline (an 28 airline assembly can be substituted or added) which is mounted inside the robot probing area. Upon operator command or at a predefined interval the robot will move the probe assembly up to the verification location and verify the system's TDR measurement accuracy.

Probe Tool Stand image

The probe tool stand contains four (4) slots to hold up to four (4) probe tools at a time for automatic pick-up by the CI1000™ robotic system. Each slot is monitored for the presence of a probe tool. Currently up to two (2) tool stands (for a total of six probe tools) can be mounted in the robot area.

Tool Changer-Robot Side
The robot side tool changer is fixed to the end of the robot arm and allows the robot to automatically pickup a variety of probe tools. It contains all of the necessary electrical hook-ups including high frequency coaxial disconnects and a tool identification system that can identify which probe tool the robot currently is utilizing.

Tool Changer -Probe Side
The probe side tool changer is mounted to the Introbotics probe assemblies to allow the probes to be utilized with the Tool Changer system.

HFT Report Writer image

The CI1000™ comes complete with a flexible data reporting package called the HFT Report Writer™.  A report can be generated locally or sent over the net. Extensive data sorting capability is provided to support process analysis. Hardcopy printouts and electronic outputs are available in the following formats:

  • Word

  • Excel

  • Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)

  • Rich Text Format (.rtf)

Please see HFT Report Writer™ for more details.

Base Tableimage

The system's base table is wheeled to support the weight of the equipment during transportation within the facility. Leveling legs are also provided for permanent installations.

WaveForm Viewer™ and Screen Captureimage

Included with both the CI1000™ and the ACCU-Prober™, the WaveForm Viewer™ allows graphic viewing of the the testing results of each controlled impedance trace. TDR waveforms can be captured for each test point, viewed off-line, and sent electronically to your engineers or customers. The Waveform Viewer allows easy selection of the impedance measurement zone and dynamically recalculates impedance for each selected zone. The viewer displays controlled impedance, propagation delay, and dielectric constant information for each trace. End and midpoint VIA affects are displayed and a dynamic cursor provides readouts of impedance along the entire trace. Printouts can be produced for documentation purposes.
